Updated On 06 Oct 2026

Agarwood plantation can be done at approximately 10,000 per hectare. It takes about 10 years to mature, thrives at 20–33°C, and grows well in clay-sandy soils, even on steep slopes.

The best time to harvest agarwood depends on the extent of disease infestation and the accumulation of oleoresin. The agarwood tree crop reach maturity after several years of growth.

Agarwood is best harvested from February to May, as the wood generally has higher oil content and fewer waxy substances during this period.

Mature agarwood is harvested and processed into chips. After soaking for 2–3 days, the chips undergo 30–36 hours of steam distillation .After that chips are used as incense and oil in perfumes.

Harvesting starts 2–3 years after inoculation. A 10-year-old tree gives 3–4 kg chips and 10–15 g oil. Around 1,700 trees/ha can be planted. Oil has three grades: Boya, Boha and Khara.
