SML ISUZU LIMITED was incorporated in July 1983 as Swaraj Vehicles Limited to manufacture Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) in Punjab. It was a Government of India initiative to save the fuel consumption in the economy.
Later changed its name to Swaraj Mazda Limited in 1986, and then officially became SML Isuzu Limited in January 2011. The name change reflected the company's partnership with Japan's Isuzu Motors, which was then its promoter and a key shareholder. On August 1, 2025, Mahindra & Mahindra acquired a controlling stake in SML Mahindra. Now, it has become the new promoter, making Sumitomo Corporation an investor rather than the primary promoter.
Swaraj Mazda's first trucks, the WT-48, WT-49, and WT-50 LCVs, were produced in 1984, with commercial operations beginning in 1986. These initial light commercial vehicles were followed by other models like the Swaraj Mazda Super in 1990 and later models such as the Samrat GS and Sartaj GS under the SML brand.
In August 2025, Mahindra & Mahindra completed its acquisition of a controlling stake in SML Isuzu and renamed the company SML Mahindra Ltd.
