Also, the brands pioneering in this category are VST Shakti mini tractors and Captain mini tractors.

Evolution of Mini Tractors in India

In India, mini tractors have been popular for the past two decades. The popularity of mini tractors boomed when farmers with small landholdings realized that a mini tractor could do almost every task as a traditional tractor that too at lower fuel consumption. The mini tractor journey of India started in 1983, with the launch of the first 4WD compact tractor, MT 180D, in India by VST Shakti. However, this was achieved in technical collaboration with MAM (Mitsubishi Agriculture Machinery).

In 1994, Mr. G T Patel and Mr. M T Patel began exploring innovative and economical solutions for small and marginal farmers. They came up with a mini tractor with a 9.5 HP engine in 1998. This was the beginning of the Captain Tractors.

As more farmers showed a positive response towards mini farm tractors, brands like Mahindra, Swaraj, and Sonalika entered the mini tractor segment during the 2000s. In 2017, Mahindra launched JIVO tractors for row crops and horticulture applications. The brand introduced its OJA series in 2023 to offer mini tractors with world-class technologies. John Deere launched a technologically advanced mini tractor, John Deere 3028 EN, in 2018.

Even though Swaraj has mainly focused on mid to higher HP tractors since its inception, it started focusing on tractors for small, fragmented landholdings during the 2000s. Its latest Target mini tractor series was launched in 2023. Beyond the 2010s, several global brands like Massey Ferguson, New Holland and Kubota started offering mini tractors and expanded their portfolio.
