About Rotavator Implement

A rotavator machine, also known as a rotary tiller, is a farm implement used to cut, mix, pulverize and level the soil before sowing and planting crops. It is used in both primary and secondary tillage operations to prepare a fine and levelled seedbed. It is among the most widely used tractor implements across the country.

Rotavators are available in different sizes. Choosing a rotavator size primarily depends on the tractor's engine power (HP) and PTO HP. Also, it must be compatible with the hitch category of the tractor.

We have listed more than 950 rotavator models from 50 brands on our portal, including Shaktiman, Maschio Gaspardo and Fieldking. Here, you can easily check out key details like specifications and their latest prices for your reference within a few clicks.

What are Mini Rotavators?

Mini rotavators are lighter and smaller than full-sized rotavators. That is why a 3 feet rotavator or 4 feet rotavator works efficiently with mini tractors. These rotavators are best suited for operations in small fields and narrow spaces. They are specially designed for intercultural operations like weeding in sugarcane fields, orchards and vineyards. The top mini rotavators available on our portal are the Maschio Gaspardo W105Sonalika Mini Hybrid and Shaktiman Proton SRT 1.0.

Rotavator by Feet

Rotavators come in different sizes and are classified by feet. Mini rotavators are compact-sized (3 to 4 feet) implements designed for narrow spaces and intercultural operations. On the other hand, 4+ feet rotavators are ideal for breaking up and aerating the soil to prepare it before sowing. A side shift rotavator allows efficient tillage in fields full of obstacles and row crops because of its ability to adjust its offset working position.

Large-sized rotavators work best with higher HP tractors. They are available in a size range of 5 feet to 12 feet. Some popular examples of these rotavators are Mahindra Gyrovator ZLX+ 185 and Sonalika Challenger HD 6 feet. The most popular rotavators used in the Indian agriculture sector are discussed below:

What are the Different Types of Blades Available in a Rotavator?

Rotavators are equipped with mainly three types of blades:

  • L-type blade: L-type blades are most common in rotavators. They are best suited for Indian soil conditions and cut, mix, and pulverize soils most effectively.
  • C-type blade: The rotavators with C-type blades have a greater tillage depth and are a perfect choice for hard ground and heavy, wet soil.
  • J-type blade: The J-type blade rotavators are specially designed to work in wet field conditions, and thus, they are the best choice for puddling operations.

How to Hitch Rotavator with Tractor?

Attaching an agriculture rotavator to a tractor properly is important as it ensures safe operations on the field. You can easily hitch a rotavator with a tractor by following the steps mentioned below:

  • The first step is to ensure the tractor and rotavator are kept on a levelled surface.
  • Based on the rotavator size, match the lower links of the tractor's 3-point linkage with the lower hinges of the rotavator.
  • Use the 3-point linkage to attach the rotavator. First, attach the lower link to the left side. Secure it with the help of the hitch pin. Do the same for the lower link on the right side. Now, attach the top link using the hitch pin.
  • The next step is to mount the drive shaft. The drive shaft provides power to the rotavator to turn its blades.
    • Ensure that the shear bolt is on the side of the rotavator. This shear bolt protects the drive shaft in the case of sudden heavy loads.
    • Attach both ends of the drive shaft to the rotavator and tractor by inserting them into the respective splines.
    • When this is done, insert the universal joint of the drive shaft in the tractor PTO and rotavator gearbox PTO.
  • The last step is to ensure that the rotavator does not lift from either side and is levelled on the ground.

Safety and Maintenance of Rotavators

Proper care and maintenance of rotavators are necessary for their long life. Change the gear oil of the rotavator on a regular basis. It must be done once every year or after 50 hours of use so that the gearbox works smoothly and for a longer time.

Wash all parts of the rotavator after every single use to remove all the collected dirt and other debris. In case of puddling, mud must be cleaned from the trailing board and blades. Check that there is no oil leakage in the gearbox, side transmission, and rotavator shaft. If there is leakage, change the gasket or mechanical seal and fill the oil again. It is recommended that you always use genuine spare parts for your rotavator.

You need to take the following precautions while operating a rotavator:

  • Make sure there are no children or animals nearby during field operations.
  • Do not allow people to sit on the back or fender seat of the tractor. They can fall over the side of the rotavator due to sudden jerks.
  • Secure the drive shaft and hitch pins tightly.
  • No part of the machinery, including blades, must be touched during operations.
  • Ensure that all the components of the rotavator are in perfect condition without cracks or wear and tear.
  • Loose-fitting clothes must be avoided as they can get stuck in the moving parts of the rotavator.
