India is a key player in the agricultural sector with a major producing country with the largest cattle herd (buffaloes), the largest area planted for wheat, cotton, and rice and is the largest producer of milk, pulses, and spices in the world. Uttar Pradesh is the most important state in agriculture by contributing around 15.11% to India’s production in 2023-24. Uttar Pradesh is the largest producing state of sugarcane which is the most produced crop in the country. The other major crops of this state produced include wheat, rice, maize, millet (bajra), gram, pea and lentils. The total production of Uttar Pradesh in 2023-24 was 485,456.27 metric tonnes.
Andhra Pradesh holds the 2nd position with a contribution of 10.01% in India’s agricultural production. The total production in 2023-24 was reported as 321,601,69 metric tonnes. The state has six agro-climatic zones and five different soil types where a wide range of crops can be grown throughout the year. The major crops produced in the state are rice, cotton, groundnut, maize, red gram, etc.
Tamil Nadu plays a vital role in India’s agricultural sector. It is prominent state in terms of crop cultivation, economic contribution and food security. In 2023-24, the state contributes around 9.18% with a total production of 294,890.71 metric tonnes. Rice, cotton, millet, and ragi are the major crops of the state.
Maharashtra has good fertile land and irrigation systems. It is known to produce sugarcane, cotton, sorghum, pearl millet, chickpea, soybean, sunflower and safflower. With 8.69% share, India’s production in 2023-24 was reported as a total of 279,278.26 metric tonnes.
West Bengal is the largest producer of rice and second largest producer of potato and fish in India. This state is also known for its special Darjeeling tea varieties. With a total production of 247,141.24 metric tonnes in 2023-24, West Bengal stood at 5th place in terms of production. The total rice production for the state was 13.32 million tonnes in 2021-22. The total share of this state in India was 7.69%.
The agricultural production in Telangana has been increasing year by year. It has fertile land and a favourable soil condition for the growth of different crops. The major crops grown in Telangana are Paddy, Cotton, Maize and Red Gram. This state contributed 7.60% share with a total production of 244,316.55 metric tonnes in 2023-24.
Finally, we have Karnataka on the list. It has suitable weather for many crops. The major crops grown in Karnataka are rice, maize, red chilli, sugarcane, turmeric, mustard and sesamum. It produces around 70% of all coffee produced in India, making it the largest producer of coffee in the country. It has a total production of 197,373.92 metric tonnes in 2023-24. It had a total share of around 6.14% of the production of the country.
Madhya Pradesh is the leading state in India when it comes to agriculture. This state is known for its fertile land, irrigation facilities and favourable climatic conditions. It produces a variety of crops, including wheat, soybean, and pulses, and has a strong presence in the production of cash crops such as cotton and oilseeds. Madhya Pradesh contributed around 6.01% in the production of the country. In 2023-24, the total production of this state was 192,966.56 metric tonnes.
Haryana’s agriculture has seen huge growth in a few years. Today, it stands as one of the major agricultural states in the country. With a share of 4.76%, Haryana reported total production of 152,833.01 metric tonnes. Haryana is the 2nd largest producer of sunflowers in the country. The major crops produced in this state are paddy, bajra and wheat.
Punjab has a strong agricultural base with 6.67 million hectares in area. More than 90% of land is used for food grain production and it is also known as “Breadbasket of India”. It is the most important state to produce rice, maize, sugarcane & barley. In 2024, rice exports from the state stood at USD 862.5 million. The total production of the state in 2023-24 was 144,354.57 metric tonnes with a share percent of 4.49 in the country. In 2021-22, Punjab produced around 14% of the country’s total wheat with just less than 12% share of the total area under its cultivation at the national level. The highest production fruits of the state include Kinnow, Guava and Mangoes.
