Sugarcane Harvester In India

What is a Sugarcane Harvester?

A sugarcane harvester is a specialized agricultural machine built to cut sugarcane at the base, remove the leaves, and chop the stalks in one continuous operation. These self-propelled combine harvesters were first developed in the 1920s. Since sugarcane harvesting generally requires a large amount of labor, using a sugarcane harvester reduces reliance on workers and helps address labor shortages. It also simplifies the harvesting process, leading to higher efficiency and improved productivity in sugarcane farming.

The sugarcane harvesting process includes several stages such as base cutting, detopping, detrashing, and loading. A sugarcane harvesting machine performs all these operations in a single pass. A sugarcane cutting machine not only enhances operational efficiency but also ensures uniform harvesting with minimal crop loss. Therefore, sugarcane harvesters have become a vital solution for modern sugarcane farming.

What are the Components of Sugarcane Harvesters?

• Gathering Mechanism: It separates the sprawled cane and aligns the ready to harvest sugarcane rows.
• Topping Mechanism: It gathers, cuts, and discards non-productive sugarcane tops.
• Base Cutter: A sugarcane cutting machine cuts the sugarcane stalks at or just below the ground.
• Feed Conveyor: It conveys the whole sugarcane stalks from the base cutter to the chopper.
• Chopper: It receives the entire sugarcane stalks from the feed conveyor and cuts them into small uniform billets.
• Elevator: It receives cut billets from the chopper and conveys them to a receptacle for transporting them to the mill.
• Cleaning by Air Blast: It consists of one or two fans to clean unwanted foreign matter, like leaves and tops that get collected along with the billet.

What are the Advantages of Sugarcane Harvesters?

Sugarcane harvesters provide multiple benefits:

• Helps overcome labor shortages in sugarcane harvesting, reducing overall costs, and increasing profits.
• Increases efficiency and productivity in sugarcane cultivation by shortening the harvesting time.
• Reduces post-harvest losses, leading to high sugarcane recovery, as cut cane is delivered to the mills within a few hours.
• The use of choppers in these machines has helped eliminate the stubble-shaving operation in the ratoon crop by cutting cane close to the ground.
• Enables easy intercultural operations with mini tractors.
• Early and uniform sprouting of stubbles.
• These machines can cut all types of canes, including fresh, unburnt canes, even those with coarse, spiny leaves, and infestations of sucking pests.
