Namo Drone Didi Scheme was introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 30, 2023. This scheme aims to empower women by providing training in drone technology. This technology also helps farmers improve agricultural productivity. In this blog, we will discuss its key features, objectives, how it works, its eligibility, benefits, and government impact.
Namo Drone Didi Scheme is a government initiative that helps women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to learn about drone technology in farming. In this, women are trained to operate drones for spraying fertilizers and pesticides in agricultural fields. Also, farmers can use these drones on a rental basis. This helps save time, increase production, and create new income opportunities.
The Namo Drone Didi Scheme is a central government scheme launched by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. This government initiative empowers women under the DAY-NRLM program through drone technology. It has a total outlay of ₹1,261 crore from 2023-24 to 2025-26.
This scheme aims to provide drones only to selected 15,000 Women SHGs. Some of its other major objectives are as follows.
Namo Drone Didi Scheme has several key features. They are described in detail below.
Financial Support – This scheme helps provide 80% of the financial assistance for purchasing drones and related equipment, which costs up to Rs. 8 lakhs. For the remaining 20%, SHGs can avail themselves of AIF (Agriculture Infrastructure Financing Facility) Loans with a 3% interest subvention.
Collaborative Implementation – This scheme is supported by the Department of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, Rural Development, and Lead Fertilizer Companies. This ensures effective delivery of drone services and other resources to rural regions.
Cluster-Based Implementation – The success of this scheme depends on selecting the right areas/clusters and Self-help Groups (SHGs) in rural areas under DAY-NRLM. The areas/clusters will be selected based on the demand from farmers and their willingness to use drone services. Areas with sufficient demand will be identified first and then eligible SHGs will be selected and chosen for implementation of the scheme.
Specialized Training – If SHG women get selected, they receive 15 days of training in drone operation, which comprises 5-day mandatory drone pilot training and additional 10 days training for agriculture purposes. Other members of the SHG group eventually train as drone assistants.
Lead Fertilizer Companies - Lead Fertilizer Companies bridge the gap between SHGs and drone manufacturing companies by providing services like procurement, repair, and maintenance of drones. Additionally, they promote efficient use of nano-fertilizers with drones.
Namo Drone Didi Scheme helps in efficient resource management and promotes sustainable farming practices. Some of its benefits include:
