The Government of India (GoI) launched Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) on 1st December 2018. It is a Central Sector scheme that works to provide financial support to our Small and Marginal Farmers (SMFs). The scheme offers Rs. 6000 per year to eligible farmer families in three equal instalments every four months.
Farmers can use this financial assistance for a variety of purposes, including household expenditures and buying key inputs to ensure healthy crops and higher yields. Also, they may not fall into the debt trap of moneylenders to fulfil such basic needs. The funds are transferred directly into farmers' bank accounts via the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. The Indian government fully funds PM-KISAN.
All landholder farmer families are eligible for PM-KISAN. As per the official definition, such a family should have a wife, husband and minor children. Also, they must own up to 2 hectares of cultivable land. The record of this landholding must be in the land records of the particular state or union territory.
