Trakstar Tractors: A Brief History

Trakstar tractors are manufactured by Gromax Agri Equipment Limited, which is a joint venture of the Government of Gujarat and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M). It boasts a customer base of over 25,000 satisfied customers. The company was founded by Pashabhai Patel, businessman-cum-politician, in 1946 as M/S Pashabhai Patel & Co. It dealt with the import, sale and service of machinery like ploughs, tractors and bulldozers.

In 1965, the name of the company was changed to Hindustan Tractors & Bulldozers Ltd. It was again changed to Hindustan Tractors Ltd. in 1967. The government of Gujarat took over the company in 1972 under the Nationalization Programme and rebranded it as M/S Gujarat Tractor Corporation Ltd. 

M&M acquired a 51% stake in the company in 1999, which was increased to 60% in 2000. The company was renamed Mahindra Gujarat Tractors Ltd. (MGTL). The Mahindra Group adopted a new brand strategy to sell Trakstar tractors in 2017, and the company name was finally changed to Gromax Agri Equipment Limited. The manufacturing plant of Trakstar tractors spans 55 acres and is located in Vadodara, Gujarat.
