About Tillage Implement

Tillage is the process of soil manipulation to provide favourable conditions for proper crop growth. Soil tillage consists of breaking the hardpan to a certain depth and loosening the soil which enables the roots of the crops to penetrate and spread into the soil. Let’s find out the different types of tillage in agriculture.

Types of Tillage

There are two types of tillage. These are primary tillage and secondary tillage. Let’s discuss each:

Primary Tillage

This tillage is practiced usually after the last harvest to open new fields for sowing. The purpose of primary tillage is to invert the soil and take out fresh nutrients to the surface and to break down the hard pan to increase the soil depth for better water absorption. Deep ploughing, subsoiling and year-round tillage are the three types of primary tillage.

Primary Tillage Implements

MB Plough: MB Plough is commonly used for primary tillage operations. It breaks, raises and inverts the soil in any type of land. The ploughing depth of MB Plough is 25 to 30 cm. It is also used to turn and mix farmyard manure and compost in the soil. MB plough from the top brands like Fieldking and Shaktiman are listed on Tractorkarvan.

Hydraulic Reversible MB Plough: A Hydraulic Reversible MB Plough is utilized in dry, hard, trashy, and stumpy land. It is a 2-way MB plough that helps to invert the soil bi-directionally, either right or left. They are compatible with 15 to 120 HP tractors. The popular brands of these ploughs are Lemken and Maschio Gaspardo.

Disc Plough: Disc Plough cuts and mixes soil with the help of an inclined disc. The disc is 60 cm in diameter. It can effectively break the clumps and, therefore, is suitable for stony soils. They work best with 35 to 120 HP tractors. Fieldking and Farmking are prominent brands for view disc ploughs.

Chisel Plough: The Chisel Plough is specially manufactured for deep tillage that ensures less disturbance to the soil’s top layers. They are mainly compatible with 38 to 100 HP tractors. John Deere and Vishwakarma are some top brands offering chisel ploughs.

Subsoiler: The Subsoiler is used for breaking hard layers of soil without bringing them up to the upper surface. It ploughs the land up to a depth of two feet. They work best with higher HP tractors. Some of the top brands for Subsoiler are Fieldking, Lemken, and Farmking.

Secondary Tillage

The purpose of the secondary tillage is to cut, mix and pulverize the soil. It breaks large clods of soil, weeds and partially uprooted stubbles. Some of the popular brands for secondary tillage implements are Shaktiman, Lemken, Fieldking, Maschio Gaspardo, Mahindra, Sonalika, and John Deere.

Secondary Tillage Implements

Rotavator: A rotavator is used in both primary and secondary tillage operations. It works best with 10 to 120 HP tractors. It is a PTO-powered machine that has a set of blades to break the soil by spinning to get a finer soil structure. Shaktiman, New Holland, and Mahindra are the top rotavator brands in India.

Cultivator: A Cultivator is a tool used for breaking the soil and removing weeds, mainly during crop maturity or during soil preparation. It is compatible with 15 to 120 HP tractors. Sonalika, Krishiking, and Fieldking are some prominent brands. It is also used in primary tillage operations.

Disc Harrow: It pulverizes the soil by shattering the soil clods formed due to ploughing. It also uproots weeds and turns the soil to mix organic matter. It has concave metal discs arranged at an oblique angle to till, flip, and level the soil. Disc Harrow works best with 25 to 120 HP tractors. Some of the top brands for Disc Harrow are Fieldking, Landforce, and Machino.

Power Harrow: Power Harrows consists of multiple sets of blades that rotate at a vertical axis to refine the soil. They require 30 to 120 HP tractors. Maschio Gaspardo, Shakitman, and Jadhao Layland are some top brands offering power harrow in India.

Ripper: A Ripper is a machine used to aerate and soften the soil for cultivation. Ripper works best with 55 to 110 HP tractors. Fieldking is one of the top brands for Ripper implements.
